Welcome to my journal. Here, you will find actual diary entries chartering the life and experiences of a busy Wedding Planner. I’ll introduce you to the talented people I meet, reflect on actual weddings I’ve planned and share real issues, experiences and lessons learned as well as wedding planning wisdom and inspirational ideas. This is my story and I am privileged to share it with you.
Hanna and Gareth's wedding at The Bivouac - Saturday 11 May 2013
It was a wonderful day filled with love and laughter, the essence of which has been captured beautifully in this fine collection of images by Lissa Alexandra of Lissa Alexandra Photography.
Guests traveled from as far a field as Hanna’s beloved homeland of Zimbabwe in order to share the kind of joy that can only really be experienced when two kindred spirits such as this special pair make their pledge to be together, forever….
“We simply can’t speak highly enough of Helen, her support and her counsel. She has become a friend and confidante of ours over the last year, and we will really miss speaking to her so regularly; planning, plotting and achieving together!
We initially didn’t want to get a Wedding Planner, because we were worried that it might impinge a little on creating our own vision and personal feel for the wedding. However, having met Helen we were immediately struck by her extremely professional, ‘can-do’ attitude and approach. Her philosophy is ‘if you want it, I will do my best to make sure it happens’ and she certainly delivered on that. Earlier fears about her getting in the way of our personal vision turned out to be completely misplaced. She simply helped us to realise it.
Helen managed the difficult balancing act of offering her wealth of practical experience in a friendly, supportive and constructive manner, filling in some of the more basic gaps in our own planning as well as helping us to realise our distinctive vision at the creative end of things. This resulted in us delivering the wedding of our dreams, which so many of our guests commented was ‘so completely us’.
Helen really cares. She dedicated more time than we think must have been profitable to her, getting to know us as a couple, and understanding what we wanted for our big day.
From the start Helen worked through our vision for the day, taking notes and helping us to shape and address the many things we had not thought of, from big details (power generator!) to the small things (high chairs for the small kids) and then sent through an outline plan/vision for the wedding. Her recommendations and contacts in the business (all of whom clearly respect her greatly) proved invaluable – and we contracted with and received top quality service from many of the suppliers she had recommended to us. She liaised with all of our suppliers prior to and during the wedding, to ensure that they were all where they needed to be, before they needed to be there. This was very important to us because we were using so many different suppliers to deliver different components because no one supplier could delivery everything we wanted.
Our weekly skype sessions with her proved invaluable in ensuring all the details were identified, managed and delivered to our exact specification and in making sure that steady progress was made towards getting the wedding planning completed and put into action on time. Helen is consistently excellent at communicating clearly, even with difficult messages. Helen is so solution focussed, that she always had bags of ideas and suggestions for making things right when they went a little pear shaped, and resolved all of our problems, even including when the venue told us at short notice that an 11pm curfew on amplified music had just been introduced!!! (Talk about potential wedding-spoiler!!!). But Helen’s suggestion of Silent Disco saved the night! When they said ‘no’, she said ‘we will find another way’.
We had some particularly difficult suppliers to deal with and Helen was superb throughout in managing them. This extended to every aspect of the planning. What we realised as we approached and passed the big day, was that Helen really took the brunt of all the normal stress associated with wedding planning and gave us total peace of mind, and exerted a very calming influence on us, even at times of crisis.
One of the things we loved about our dealings with Helen were that we laughed together, a lot. When things were good, and when things weren’t so good – it really helped!
On the actual day itself, Helen unobtrusively managed the wedding from behind the scenes, making sure that the whole thing ran bang on time, and without a hitch. No item was too large or too small for her to roll her sleeves up and sort it out and she was seen variously: cutting desserts and the wedding cheese, organising the music and sound system, bringing the grooms forgotten shirt to him, fresh from cleaning and ironing, sorting out last minute crises with the bride and entourage, and we are nearly certain, but cannot prove, that she thwarted weather forecasts of “heavy rain”, by delivering some personally arranged sunshine, at the exact right moment in the ceremony!
We are certain that thanks to Helen’s involvement, our stress levels remained 100% lower, our plan was 100% more complete, the day ran 100% smoother ……… and as a result our big day was 1000% better for it!
